(blogingenieria.com)

Septicemia occurs when a bacterial infection from parts of the body such as lungs or skin enters the bloodstream and causes a serious bloodstream infection known as blood poisoning.

The most common causes of septicemia are bacterial infections however they can be caused by other infections. Septicemia must be treated immediately and in the hospital or it can turn into sepsis which is the presence in tissues of harmful bacteria typically through infection of a wound.

Causes of Septicemia
Septicemia is caused by infections that spread through  out the body however they can be caused by numerous types of bacteria infections . Some of the most common examples are :
  • urinary tract infections
  • lung infections
  • kidney infections
  • infections in the abdomen or stomach

Who are mostly likely to get Septicemia?
Septicemia is a disease that needs to be cared for as soon as the patient is aware of her/his condition however there are a certain people that have a higher risk of getting the disease.
People that have severe wounds or burns have a higher tendency of bacterial infections which could cause septicemia. In addition, people that are very young or in contrast, very old are more likely to get the disease. As mentioned before urinary tract infections are  a very common examples of septicemia causes therefore if a person has a urinary catheter meaning therefore they are at a higher risk of being infected. Lastly, since the bacterial infection weakens the immune system any type of medical treatment that weakens the medical system already such as steroids or cancer medication can lead to septicemia.

Consequences of Septicemia
Septicemia has numerous complications and are a result of septicemia not being treated for too long.

1.Septic Shocks
  • The patient can lead a in a serious drop in blood pressure because the bacteria that is released in the bloodstream can cause a low blood flow resulting in the patient needing intensive care.

2.Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
  • Prevention of oxygen reaching blood or lungs, overtime this could results in lung and brain damage

3.Sepsis
  • Sepsis occurs due to a strong response to the infection in the body and can cause severe inflammations and organ failures.

Septicemia is treated mainly by a wide range of antibiotics and depending on the consequences that follow the patient may be given blood pressure medication and blood clot prevention medication.
